The brand name "C.E" is derived from the "Caveat Emptor" tattoo worn by a character in Philip K. Dick's science fiction novel, Ubik. Meaning "buyer beware" (the buyer takes the risk of the quality) in Latin, this phrase can be interpreted as a satire on consumer society, or perhaps a challenge to those who acquire the brand's items.
01. A Chemical Reaction Between Three Pioneers
To talk about C.E, one cannot overlook the existence of its three core creators.
SK8THING: A graphic genius who has been driving Ura-Harajuku culture since the 90s.
Toby Feltwell: A director with a unique aesthetic sensibility, having worked at key institutions such as Mo'Wax and A Bathing Ape.
Yutaka Hishiyama: Supporting the foundation of the brand's operations and pursuing perfection in its products. These three individuals started C.E in 2011 with a stance of "not setting a specific concept."
02. Postmodernism and the Design of "Discomfort"
C.E apparel incorporates elements such as postmodernism, retro-futurism, and satire on surveillance society through highly sophisticated graphics and language.
Layering of Graphics: Screen noise, broken communications, and digital decay (glitches). These are not mere decorations, but visualizations of the distortions within the modern information society we live in.
Reconstruction of Silhouettes: Wide body widths, extremely short lengths, or unique textures achieved through over-dyeing. The "refined sense of discomfort" felt when putting on a piece is one of the reasons C.E enjoys such a cult following.
03. The Freedom of Being Seasonless
They intentionally forgo the "seasonal themes" adopted by many brands. This is proof of truly free creation, refusing to be bound by fixed imagery. Every new delivery serves as a fragment that reflects the "now" of that moment.
